Accelerating Long-Lasting LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

Driving inclusion and safety for the LGBTQIA+ community is more urgent than ever. Globally,  the increase in anti-LGBTQIA+ legislations, coupled with the US cutting crucial support such as USAID, have led to increased harassment and discrimination, with negative impacts on mental health and wellbeing on individuals. Simultaneously, the tightening political atmosphere contributes to a growing climate of intolerance and exclusion, making it even more critical for workplaces to actively support and build inclusion for their LGBTQIA+ employees.

While Pride celebrations tend to globally culminate in the summertime, LGBTQIA+ inclusion is a year round commitment. Yet many organizations are unsure of how to create sustainable and long-lasting inclusion for gender and sexual minorities in the workplace.

Active Inclusion Measures Reduce Discrimination Against Transpeople in Working Life

In the Nordics, The Nordic Council of Minister’s 2024 study on the working life conditions of trans people reveals that  the unemployment rate for trans persons is twice as high as for cis people. Trans people are also more vulnerable to bullying and discrimination in the workplace than cispeople. However, the study highlights that active measures to create inclusion do have an impact: for trans people,  a supportive organisational climate is linked to job satisfaction and health  –  as well as willingness and courage to be open in the workplace.

The study highlights that in order to create inclusion for trans people and the LGBTQIA+ community more broadly, both the  overt and covert identities of employees need to be taken into account. This means that a workplace should not take for granted that someone has a particular sexual orientation or gender identity. Here, the key is to build inclusion into organizational practices while also upskilling the broader working community.
